Our projects

The challenge of this surgical expedition that took us to Mauritania was to perform ophthalmological surgery to prevent blindness, given the lack of means when it comes to treating the diseases that cause it.

In many cases, these are treatable forms of blindness linked to the presence of cataracts, even in people who are not very old. Through the specialized medical care that we make available to the population, we contribute to the almost complete rehabilitation of people who are absolutely disabled and who even depend on another person to walk.

This mission is part of the international cooperation project “Nouadhibou Vision”, promoted by the Jorge Alió Foundation in 2007 on the occasion of the first expedition to the city of Nouadhibou, in Mauritania.

In the first phase, efforts are focused on the child population and then ophthalmological care is extended to the general population. Ten years later, in order to respond to the growing needs of the 300,000 inhabitants living in this area of Africa, the only eye hospital in Mauritania and Saharan Africa was inaugurated, very popular in the city and in its area of influence and integrated into the national health system.

In the La Libertad District of Trujillo, in Peru, there is a huge garbage dump known as El Milagro, in which about 40,000 people live working in conditions of extreme poverty, since their only economic activity is the collection by hand of the waste that accumulates there and around which this population center is built.

The complicated socio-economic situation of the population determines the existence of multiple needs to be met, both in the health and educational fields. For this reason, we decided to join the cooperation project of comprehensive support for the community jointly promoted by Voluntaris de Mallorca and Sister Catalina Vallespir, a religious of Mallorcan origin and member of Caritas Trujillo, who has been living in this area of the world for 35 years.

In order to support the children of the region, who are the future generators of change in their communities and in their country, we implement a visual health program consisting of carrying out optometric and ophthalmological check-ups on students at the Toni Real and Aroldo Otegui schools and their families and providing them with prescription glasses on a regular basis to improve their vision conditions.

In 2018, in order to take a further step in favor of the population of El Milagro, a medical dispensary was set up at the Toni Real school, which serves 300 students between 3 and 17 years old, thanks to the proceeds obtained at the solidarity gala on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of our foundation.

In collaboration with the Association for the Integral Development of Zacualpa and Voluntaris de Mallorca, we are responsible for establishing a stable and sustainable visual health service in the municipality of Zacualpa (Guatemala), in the district of El Quiché, aimed at the population without resources. This service consisted of providing outpatient medical care in the area and providing pre-prescription glasses.

In addition, thanks to the help of the Eyes of Guatemala Foundation, a cataract surgical campaign was also carried out at the local outpatient clinic, in charge of the Oftalmedic Salvà team. Similarly, the project promoted the training and autonomy of local collaborators through training programs so that they could carry out eye examinations to assess the general state of visual health and determine the necessary therapeutic measures.
